10th Cavalry Brigade, also known as „Black Brigade” due to the black jackets worn by the soldiers, was first and only fully operational Polish motorised infantry unit in September 1939. Commanded by famous Colonel Maczek “Black Brigade” has never been decisively defeated and did not surrender to the Germans. Armed with about 40 tanks and tankettes 10th Brigade was fully motorised, including motorcycles, artillery tractors and trucks. Attached to Kraków Army (Cracow Army) formation fought since 1st of war, participating in battle of Jordanów. During this fight, on the mountainous terrain, Maczek's soldiers destroved over 30 German tanks, losing only few of its own, shielding other Polish forces and preventing enemy maneuvers.

In the late stages of the September Campaign “Black Brigade” fought in defence of Lwów, against both Germans and Soviets. After the defeat of Poland they managed to cross the border with Hungary and later most of the soldiers have joined formed in 1942 1st Polish Armored Division.
