10th Cavalry Brigade, as the first fully motorised infantry unit, showed a huge need for fast, mobile recon. Such a solution was provided by motorcycle squadrons.

Those bikes proved to by vital in the formation, allowing fast movement and effective reconnaissance. During combat most of the bikers fought like traditional infantry units, but the flexibility and tactical possibilities were often put to good use by skilled officers and commanders. Wearing black leather jackets motorcyclers fit in perfectly to the unit, emphasizing the nickname “Black Brigade”.

The Black Brigade fought as a part of Kraków Army (Cracow Army) right since 1st of September. The so called “Border war” lasted for 5 days – during that period Maczek's soldiers launched succesful counterattacks in the region near Tatra mountains. They destroved numerous German vehicles with little casulties, preventing enemy from encricling the defenders.
